iglidur® C500 is a member of the family of extremely media and temperature-resistant iglidur® materials X, X6 and A500. Improved wear resistance and greater design freedom - e.g. as a guide ring - characterises this material.

Mechanical properties

Maximum recommended surface pressure represents a mechanical material parameter. Tribological conclusions cannot be drawn from it. With increasing temperatures, the compressive strength of iglidur® C500 plain bearings decreases. Fig. 02 clarifies this connection.

Figure 03 shows how iglidur® C500 elastically deforms under radial load. Under the maximum recommended surface pressure of 110 MPa, the deformation at room temperature is below 4,5%.

Table 02: Maximum surface speeds

Permitted surface speeds

The maximum permissible surface speed is determined by the resulting frictional heat at the bearing point. The temperature should rise only up to a value that still ensures a reasonable bearing insert with regard to wear and dimensional accuracy.

The maximum values stated in Table 02 are valid only with minimum pressure loads and are often not attained in practice.

Temperatures

The iglidur® C500 is one of the most temperature-resistant iglidur® materials. Like in all thermoplastics, the compressive strength of iglidur® C500 decreases with rising temperature. The temperatures prevailing in the bearing system also have an influence on the bearing wear. The wear rises with increasing temperatures. An additional securing is recommended at temperatures higher than +130°C.

Friction and wear

The friction and wear values for iglidur® C500 are even more favourable than on the other high-temperature materials, iglidur® X and A500. The friction value increases moderately as the gliding speed increases. The friction value initially drops rapidly to less than 0.1 under loads of up to approx. 20 MPa, and then only marginally increases as loads continue to increase. Friction and wear also depend to a high degree on the reverse partner. Very smooth shafts increase the coefficient of both friction and wear. Ideally suited is a smoothed surface with an average surface finish of Ra = 0.6 to 0.8 µm.

shaft materials

The Fig. 06 displays the results of tests with different shaft materials conducted with plain bearings made of iglidur® C500.

In the example of a rotational motion with radial loads of 1 MPa and a speed of 0.3 m/s, it becomes clear that iglidur® C500 is very constant in wear for a wide variety of shaft types. In this case, only the pairing with machining steel stand out upwards, and remarkably the pairing with aluminium HC downwards. The wear in rotation is higher than in swivelling movements (Figure 07) particularly with increasing radial loads.

Electrical properties

Specific forward resistance > 1014 Ωcm
surface resistance > 1013 Ω
iglidur® C500 bearings are electrically insulating.

Chemical resistance

iglidur® C500 plain bearings have good resistance to chemicals. br>
Most organic and inorganic acids, as well as alkalis or lubricants do not attack iglidur® C500.

Radioactive rays

iglidur® C500 withstands both the neutron and gamma particle radiations without noticeable loss to its excellent mechanical properties. iglidur® C500 bearings are radiation resistant up to a radioactive intensity of 3 x 10² Gy.

UV-resistant

iglidur® C500 bearings are permanently resistant against UV rays.

Vacuum

Water elements are degassed in the vacuum. Due to the low water absorption, an application in the vacuum is however possible.

Moisture absorption

The humidity absorption of iglidur® C500 bearings amounts to about 0.3 Wt.-% in standard climatic conditions. The saturation limit in water is likewise below 0.5%.

Installation tolerances

iglidur® C500- bearings are standard bearings for shafts with h-tolerance (recommended minimum h9). The bearings are designed for press-fit in a housing with h7 tolerance. After the installation in a housing with nominal diameter, the inner diameter of the bearing automatically adjusts to the F10 tolerance.
