Road core drilling machine -
taking road samples with great force
The infraTest Prüftechnik GmbH is engaged in the development, manufacture and sale of testing and analysis devices for the entire building materials sector. From standard testing devices to complex dynamic large-scale systems and turnkey laboratory system solutions, a team of almost 50 employees develops equipment technology for testing asphalt, concrete, cement and soil. The company manufactured a special road core drilling device to collect samples from roads. You can read about the special features and challenges faced while executing this order in this application report.

Profile

  • What was needed: Linear guides, plain bearings
    spherical bearings, energy chains
  • Requirements: The road core drilling device for taking samples from roads and airport runways requires products that are particularly robust and also light and maintenance-free.
  • Industry: Machine tools
  • Success for the customer: Our maintenance-free products offer the customer a solution that can withstand high forces in a compact design.

Problem

The infraTest Prüftechnik GmbH developed a road core drill that can take samples from roads and runways that have a concrete or asphalt surface. The samples are drilled using diamond drill bits and subsequently analysed.

The problem with hard ground: particularly high forces act on all parts of the road core drilling machine. These must have a certain strength to be able to withstand the forces. At the same time, however, there are also other challenges: since the drilling rig is designed like a compact trailer and is portable, it was also important that the installed components had a compact design and therefore were lightweight. The customer also attached particular importance to ensuring that all components were as maintenance-free as possible.

Solution

With the help of igus® components, infraTest Prüftechnik GmbH developed a road core drilling machine that could withstand all of the customer's challenges. Lead screw axes of the SLW series and small micro energy chains were used.

Furthermore, to ensure the high strength and withstand the high forces acting on the component, a SHTC lead screw module was used for the installed axis. This belongs to the Heavy Duty series and was specially designed to withstand extremely high loads. Of course, all igus® components used are maintenance-free and free of external lubrication.

The collaboration with igus® also convinced the customer. A salesman was always there personally for the customer and was able to provide prompt advice on site.
